Description

The balanced composition and sober colours of this icon reveal a complex iconography. At the centre is the Mother of God with Christ holding a ladder in front of her breast. The ladder is a depiction of the Akathist Hymn dedicated to Mary. Angels with attributes from the hymn are grouped in rose petals around mother and child. The corners of the icon show the visions of four prophets, each dealing with a prophecy about Mary.
