Apostle James the Great

Region: Russia
Period: c. 1700
Size: 42 x 18 cm

Description

James the Great was one of the 12 apostles of Christ. He was the son of Zebedee and Salome, a sister of Mary (the mother of Jesus) and therefore a cousin of Jesus. In the New Testament, James and his brother John the apostle are also called the sons of Zebedee. Although modest in size, the apostle is painted with great attention to style and detail, mirroring examples from the 15th-16th centuries.
