Region: Russia (Moscow)
Period: c. 1800
Size: 30.5 x 27 cm

Description

A rare iconography of the princes and martyrs Boris and Gleb, depicted standing under a the Old Testament image of the Trinity. The two brothers were murdered during a period of internal wars from 1015-1019 by their brother Sviatopolk, who alone wanted to claim the throne of the Kiev Empire. While the brothers are depicted in magnificent princely attire, their stance expresses their acceptance of martyrdom, which ultimately triumphed over their brother’s violence and bloodshed.
