Region: Russia
Period: c. 1800
Size: 35.5 x 30.5 cm

Description

The three hierarchs, Gregory the Theologian, Basileios the Great and John Chrysostomos are very important to the early Christian church. Previously, the saints each had their separate feast days. In the 11th century, there was disagreement among Christians in Constantinople. Who was now the most important of these three? Groups emerged calling themselves Basilians, Gregorians and Johannites. Until in the year 1084, the saints appeared in a dream of the bishop of Euchaita. The saints told that they were all equal before God and that there should be no more quarrelling. Since then, they have often been depicted together.
