Description

Calendar icons depict the main saints and ecclesiastical feasts of a particular month throughout the year. Sometimes these are annual icons, but usually the feasts and saints of a particular month are painted on 12 separate panels. The month icons are called menaia, after the book Menaion. This is a set of 12 volumes describing the lives of the saints. It was written by Macarius of Moscow, in the 16th century.
