The archangel Michael wears a magnificent soldier’s outfit with a flapping red cloak. He stands triumphantly over the just-conquered Satan, depicted here as a dark, human figure with wings. The archangel holds a sword in his left hand and with his right hand he carries the martyr’s cross. Orthodox believers revered this mighty captain of the heavenly army as a personal protector against evil and frequently depicted Michael on house icons.
