Dormition of the Mother of God

Region: Northern Russia
Period: Late 16th century
Size: 62 x 52 cm

Description

The last years of the Mother of God are described in the Legenda Aurea, a compilation of saints’ stories from the late 13th century, which brings together many stories that had been known for centuries. The story of the Mother of God, for example, was told in the Near East as early as the 2nd century. It shows the Mother of God lying on her bier, surrounded by disciples who had been brought to her by angels shortly before. Christ takes her soul, in the form of a child, to heaven.
