Description
The Mother of God has the Christ Child on her lap. The child looks away from the Mother of God to the viewer, he carries a sphere with a cross in his left hand. The Veneto-Cretan icons are an expression of the culture that arose in the city of Candia. Candia (nowadays Heraklion) was the capital of Crete when the island was under Venetian rule in the 13th to 17th centuries. The city became an important center, especially for trade, and many cultures lived together and influenced each other.
