Transfiguration of Christ

Region: Russia (Kaluga)
Period: Late 18th century
Size: 54 x 44.5 cm

Description

This finely painted icon, with late Baroque and Rococo influences, depicts the miracle of the Transfiguration of Christ. Remarkably, not only is this transfiguration itself depicted, but also the preceding and following events, as described in the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, captured in the same composition. Christ and his three disciples are depicted four times, each at a different time of the story and in a different state of mind.
